An Overview Of Country Style Curtains

By Jaclyn Hurley

Curtains help make a house feel like a home, yet are often overlooked and taken for granted. Day after day, year after year they add color and texture to a room while keeping out unwanted light and noise; and with hundreds of patterns, sizes and colors to choose from, homeowners can find just the style they want for their home. Many prefer country style curtains to make their house feel more cozy and inviting. These styles can be found in numerous retail and online stores, with some specializing only in these window treatments.

People have used drapes for many years. Ancient establishments like the Olynthus and Pompeii had draperies hanging on their walls. However, most of them were used to divide spaces creating different rooms. Today, homeowners install them to improve privacy, shade and insulation in their houses.

Drapes are typically hung on the inside of a window, although some can also be hung over doorways; when used in this fashion they are known as portieres. Consumers can find many different types of these window treatments to suit their needs. Available options include sheer, uncoated, and coated.

A sheer curtain is usually made of cotton, lace, or polyester. Its translucency allows large amounts of light to filter through, while still providing some level of privacy and UV protection. However, due to their loosely weaved material, these, sheers, do not provide much heat insulation.

Any curtain made of tightly woven blend of polyester and cotton will absorb a lot of heat and light. These will work properly even though they are uncoated. However, they will allow a good amount of light into your room during the day. This makes them a poor choice for bedrooms for people who prefer darker sleeping environments.

For highest light and heat absorption, choose coated fabrics. This is usually a standard material, coated with a layer of thick rubber on the backside. Such drapes are commonly called blackout curtains due to their ability to block about 50-70 percent of UV sunlight. Many people will choose these for their bedrooms since they also absorb noise thus making the environment quiet and suitable for relaxing or sleeping.

Draperies also vary in degrees of fire resistance, dust and oil absorption. At the same time, they vary in ease of cleaning and maintaining. Make sure to consider such qualities when choosing.

At the same time, one will require to measure windows of their houses properly before going out shopping. It could be challenging to find the best color, patterns and styles due to the various options available in the shops today. However, one can choose to stick to their taste or existent theme design in their homes. Buy some rods, hooks and other accessories required to hang the drapes on a wall.

For ease of opening and closing, shoppers can also find handy tools such as draw-pulls, curtain rods or a corded curtain track. Country-style curtains can add an ambience of warmth, cheer and hospitality to any home; and with so many options, homeowners are sure to find the perfect fit for their windows.
