The Versatility Of Copper Top Dining Tables

By Kristen Baird

When choosing a table, various factors have to be taken into account such as the size of the room in which it will be placed and its design style. Copper top dining tables are becoming increasingly popular as people discover their versatility and durability. They fall in love with the varied, rich colors offering stunning visual appeal. They are also discovering that maintenance is not a problem, contrary to fears of many about factors like rusting.

This malleable material is easy to work with but strong and durable at the same time. Coppersmiths through the centuries have hand forged, hammered and burnished it, bringing out its beautiful colors. The fact that it develops a patina when oxidation takes place is not regarded as a disadvantage by those who love it. In fact, many appreciate it for this very quality. They enjoy the fact that no patina is alike, making each piece distinctive.

One of the reasons why tabletops made of this material have become so popular is that they are suited to so many different design styles. If a home is filled with wooden furniture with a reddish hue or a deep brown color, adding a tabletop with patina complements it very well. A tabletop like this can look equally good in a rustic farmhouse, a vintage cottage, a ranch style hacienda or a modern loft. It provides warm, rustic charm but has elegance too, particularly when paired with an antique style base.

There are numerous different base styles used for these tabletops. Metals like wrought iron and steel are frequently used. A single pedestal may support the tabletop or four intricately shaped wrought iron legs may be used. Many of the legs have an antique feel as this marries well with the look of the tops.

Different finishes are available too and selection is very much a matter of individual taste. Some people love the patina that develops when the material is not sealed. They enjoy the aged appearance and unique colors that develop with the process of oxidation. When a tabletop is sealed with wax, this process does not occur. Sealing with wax gives a glossy, rich sheen to the top and as long as the wax is regularly applied, the appearance remains the same.

The softness of the materials means that dents and abrasions can occur. These can usually be buffed out but many people actually like the aged look this imparts. The hammered look, where the material is hammered in a tight pattern, does not show dents and abrasions easily. This is due to the curvy and dimpled surface texture.

Maintenance of such tabletops is not difficult at all. It is a simple matter of wiping it down, dusting and waxing on a regular basis if the surface is sealed. No chemicals or abrasive cleaners are necessary. Hot items should not be directly placed on the surface, as is the case with any table. Any spills of acidic foods should be wiped off as soon as possible as they can change the patina.

Shopping online for such items allows for easy comparison of designs and prices. A reputable supplier will usually offer some guarantee and clearly state return policies and shipping information. Many of them allow for customization with regard to size, style of bases and other elements. This enables a customer to purchase one-of-a-kind furniture that is a perfect fit for a particular home.
