Comparing Finger Jointed And MDF Decorations For Interior Moldings Fort Myers

By Jana Serrano

Browsing through comments posted on online forums reveal strong feelings regarding medium density fiberboard as appropriate interior decoration material. A number of carpenters profess to love it while several despise it. Ultimately, the choice between MDF and bit-jointed decoration rests on personal preferences. Each product works well in some instances although it is important to understand their differences and use as paintable interior moldings Fort Myers.

If you are looking for consistency in your material, MDF is a good choice. Components are wood shavings, resin, tiny wood chips and sawdust. They create uniform material for your nailing, painting and cutting. It is a cheaper trimming than the finger-jointed one, which means you save huge costs in trimming your entire Fort Myers FL house.

MDF is floppy and heavy which makes it hard for a single person to install and handle. Their long lengths break easily than pieces of bit-jointed decoration. The material suppleness allows it to follow waves in walls rather than stretching over them. This means less space to fill and a wavy appearance as a result. Their face forte is quite high making it difficult for nailing but more resilience to superficial damage. MDF have low edge strength meaning outside miters need careful handling.

Its material gives you poor strength withdrawal due to lack of grain for nails to grab. Adhesive is needed with clamping from nails as the adhesive dries up. Do not use it in your bathrooms because it will swell in wet and high humidity surroundings. If you have to cut it, do it outside because cutting it emits a sharp dust and you will need to wear a respirator or close fitting mask.

MDF comes from its manufacturer quite smooth and calls for sanding simply to prepare its surface for better primer adhesion and removal of debris. MDF molding is factory primed which seals it against moisture. However, an additional coat of primer certifies a better surface to apply final coats.

Since MDF is more stable than wood, various manufacturers do not prime its back. If sealing is required, it is preferable to use oil based as opposed to latex based priming since latex products causes its material to swell. Texture on the surface also appears which is impossible or difficult to sand over. However, once a primer coat is applied, latex paint is applicable. Manufacturers have to utilize carbide rather than steel knives since MDF stultifies molding knives made of steel faster compared to wood. Carbide knives are harder to shape to sharp profiling therefore MDF constitutes softer profiles in comparison to finger-jointed trimming.

Bit-jointed decoration moldings are better than solid wood though less expensive products, are factory primed, less susceptible to twisting and warping. This better stability arises from having individual small pieces joined together using interlocking fingers and glue. Finger-jointed decoration is stiff and light for an individual to install. It holds nails quite well because it is made of real wood.

You can seal your trimmings of this material using either oil-based or latex primers. Since it does not have knots, you do not need sealing with shellac priming that would be very expensive if you compared it with oil or latex based primers. Excellent products arise from sharp profiling which makes fine shadow lines. That is the expectation from well-trimmed rooms. These trims expand or contract differently due to creation from differing trees. If you use poor quality material, your joints will stick out from your paint with time.
