Tile Patterns Fast And Easy

By Mike Hartwick

Tile is known worldwide for it's ability to function as a floor and wall covering. However, it can also add beauty to a space like no other. However, it is always a smart idea to pick a tile pattern that you know will work well to help ensure you get the best results possible from your project. So here is a fast guide to give you the basics.

The easiest to install and also without a doubt the most widely used, is the straight lay tile pattern. Like its name suggests individual tiles are set down in a line and are even with the ones on either side. This pattern can be a fabulous starting point for someone who wants to do the job themselves and gain some DIY experience in the process.

Portraying more of a vintage look, the checkerboard pattern is another easy choice. In fact, it is really just the the straight lay tile pattern but using black and white tiles. Tiles are set in alternating fashion to construct a wall or floor space that looks just like a chess or checkerboard. Nowadays many manufacturers actually make tiles which have both black and white alternating squares on each one to make installation even more effortless.

One of the most well known of all patterns is the running bond. You will also see this sometimes referred to as the brick tile pattern because it is commonly seen in brickwork. Tiles are first set in a straight line. The tiles in the following row are put down so that they line up with the halfway mark of the tile in the preceding one. For both the floor and wall it can work wonders despite being relatively simple.

Don't despair if you had something more complicated in mind, there are other choices. The herringbone tile pattern is one which never fails to disappoint. It gets its name from how similar it looks to the skeleton of a herring, a fish known to be very bony. One more intricate choice is the Versailles. This layout uses a larger number of tiles of many different sizes and can be very classy looking. Both of these however, should be installed by someone who has some serious tiling experience, not the average Joe.

When picking a layout make sure you first decide on your goals. Also you'll need to accurately measure your space so you know what size area you are working with. From easy to complex there are tile patterns for everyone to fall in love with!
