Using Reed Diffusers In Your Home

By Susan Cooper

We desire to make our houses smell attractive, either because it's our favourite scent or to mask other smells such as cooking. Imagine coming home after a holiday, and instead of your house being stuffy, it smells of citrus and cinnamon due to the reed diffusers installed throughout.

Nice smelling candles or incense always carry a risk of fire and soot, so the diffuser is definitely a safer choice. You would be hard-pressed to settle on which lovely smell suits which room in your home as the variety of oils is so vast, encompassing everything from floral scents to more exotic combinations. Kitchen, entryway, bathroom and living room could be treated to a different fragrance with the option to change them around as you wish to.

It should be an easy task to find a diffuser that will fit in with your furnishings. They are readily available and most shops will carry a large enough selection to please their customers. You will be able to select the scents at the same time as the bottle and be able to buy spare diffuser reeds.

Should you have opted for the all in one diffuser kit, you will find the attractive display bottle already contains the oil, ready to receive the reeds. However, if you have purchased your oil separately you'd need to fill your decorative bottle and arrange your reeds in it. Make sure you store your extra oil out of direct sunlight and in a cool area, such as a cupboard, to preserve it.

To start using your diffuser, insert the reeds into the small bottle. The reeds will gradually absorb oil, allowing the fragrance to permeate the air. Make sure you place the container onto a small plate or mat to prevent surface damage and keep away from pets and young children.

By placing the bottle near a source of airflow, like a window or vent, the fragrance will be gently diffused throughout the room, with movements of air dissipating the pleasant smells, leaving the area smelling sensational.

The reeds should be carefully flipped over if you need a fresh burst of fragrance or if you think the scent has faded, usually weekly. The reeds can and should be replaced if they become clogged or dusty as this will prevent them from emitting the scent. It is advised to replace the reeds every time you refill the bottle. Before refilling the bottle, wash it thoroughly with warm, soapy water and allow it to dry completely.

Cheaper oils will usually not last as long as the more expensive ones. They will more than likely contain artificial ingredients and smell accordingly artificial. The overall result will be disappointing. If you buy the better quality products in this instance, you will definitely benefit, as a very small amount of oil could fill your rooms with your chosen fragrance for up to four months.
