Information About Different Foams And Making Replacement Leather Cushions

By Morris Lewis

Nothing is as great as stretching out on a sofa and watching tv or playing the latest video game with some family and friends. The problem is that like everything else, most sofas over time will wear out. The easiest fix for this is to find replacement leather cushions or the cushion foam to fix them. Finding the right foam can mean the difference between the sofa everyone fights to have a seat on and the sofa that just collects dust.

Generally cushions made from foam have 4 distinct layers. The center layer is the foam core and is often made from open-cell foam. Wrapped around this is a small layer of one or two inch batting to make it appear rounder and provide softness. This is typically glued on so it can not move around or slide off inside the cushion.

Around all this is a thin fabric layer which helps protect the inside parts from contaminates. The outer layer is often made of the vinyl, leather or fabric that goes around all of it and forms the outer shape of the cushions. Not every cushion is the same though generally this is the basic breakdown for many of them.

When picking the correct kind of foam for using it is important to understand the various types you can buy. Understand what items you will be using it on and the properties which are important for your application. There are numerous fillers that can used for new or old repairs that will also have varying characteristics.

Compressed polyester is not really foam instead it is a dense polyester batting which is generally used as a soft foam alternative for some applications. It will not break down and yellow over time like many foams. It also lets water pass through it quite easily and will dry easily afterwards. It can compress after long term use, though it can be easily fluffed back up.

Polyester fiberfill is like compressed polyester only shredded or blown fibers that are not matted together. This is one of the most inexpensive options some one can choose to use. It is often used for pillows, pillow tops and deep bottom or back cushions. It is resistant to moisture and non-allergenic as well as machine washable. All these options make it a versatile choice.

Treated polyurethane foam is getting used more and more often as well. It is often treated with some form of biocide treatment so it is longer lasting and will not mildew. This is important for items that could possibly be exposed to liquids like water and soda. Though it is often recommended that any filler is wrapped with plastic to help protect it from liquids.

After choosing the foam to use on your replacement leather cushions, remember to wrap it with a protective covering to ensure it will last. Common choices for material are light plastic, silk and cotton fabric. Whatever you decide to go with, remember there are always different companies that are happy to fix it for you for a small price.
