How Fireplace Covers Can Enhance Safety Of Fireplaces

By Leslie Ball

If you can think about the age and history of fireplaces, you will realize that they have been used since time immemorial. Fireplaces have all through been providing warmth in the house during that time when the weather gets too cold to survive such as the winter nights. Using fireplace covers also has been there for long but it has also transformed from the safety aspect to more of a design and visual appeal.

Nowadays, fireplaces have been designed in a modern setting environment. They are not only used for warming up the home but also creating a visual appeal. To achieve this goal, the fires are often decked out with use of decorative parts such as the mantles in order to make the focal point of the house.

And while some of the fireplace accessories are designed to help in creating a visual appeal, the doors and screens have multiple functions in their use. The covers will add that touch of beauty. In addition, they help in enhancing the safety and efficiency of the fireplaces.

Using the doors or screens to cover the fireplaces has shown that it can reduce the possibility of suffering injuries among the family members or the risk of having home fires. When people think of fires in houses, they often imagine of those raging chimneys fires. Such fires are caused by creosote buildup, poor chimneys maintenance, and bad draft.

Each year, there are thousands of premises owners who lose their property and others are killed or severely injured in fires that arise in the houses. These are fires that could have been prevented if there are covers used in fireplaces. Without using the fireplace doors or screens, energy is lost up in chimneys when burning the wood logs.

When the fireplace doors and screens are used, they cover the fires and prevent these incidents of flying embers therefore enhancing safety. The chimneys are likely to catch fire when creosote, a flammable substance that is released from unburned energies, is ignited by embers of fire or extreme heat from the flues. Huge losses of property have been reported in homes and lives cut short because of house fires.

Many people lose their properties and others die from the fires that are triggered by the burning creosote in chimneys. When creosote forms inside chimneys, embers or sparks of fire may come from the burning wood and travel up the draft to ignite the flammable creosote. This triggers the devastating fires witnessed in many homes from chimneys.

While much focus has been on the chimney fires, the homeowners may not realize that there is potentially another dangerous situation that is presented when burning the woods in fireplaces. The open fires that are not covered could still present a level of risk that many people may not be aware of. Besides, a lot of energy is lost when the wood burns because the fireplaces have not been covered.
