Fixing Up And Beautifying Your Pocket Door Set

By Jerri Perry

In the Victorian era, houses were made differently, with various kinds of features. Often, one will find a pocket door set in these types of homes, which was placed for convenience. Doors like this can be placed in kitchens, living areas, bathrooms or really any part of the home. They require little space for their doors to move, as they slide to open. If you have one somewhere in your house that is not working or does not look attractive, you may need some ideas on how to restore it.

You can choose how you use these sliding doors. You can keep them closed when you need a barrier between two rooms, or you can keep them open when you would like the area to feel more spacious. An item of furniture could even conceal the doors when they are open, so that the area looks as if it has no doors at all.

When anything does not work properly in the home it is an annoyance. Things that don't work tend to be just left to get old, unless they are of extreme importance. Your sliding doors, however, that are perhaps difficult to open and close, can be fixed relatively easily. There is no need to leave them broken.

Before something can be fixed, a problem needs to be located. Since that the doors are of a sliding nature, their main problems usually occur within their tracks. Doors that won't budge could possibly have come off their rails, and will have to repositioned. If you simply need to make your doors slide with less effort, cleaning could be required, or the tracks need to be made tighter.

Most often, you will need to remove the doors before you can start fixing the problems, as their track will need to be exposed. Once you have the doors disconnected, you can give the track a thorough clean and inspection. Sometimes a simple clean is all that is needed to get the doors going again.

You should also ensure that the rails are still straight, and have not been bent or damaged in any way that would obstruct the doors from moving freely. Tightening the rails is also easy, and can be done with any ordinary screwdriver. Lost screws may also have caused problems, and can be replaced. While you have the rails exposed, some lube will be beneficial. Check the doors' hardware as well, for any problems.

Parts of the home that have been around for a long time get worn, and tatty-looking. You can restore your doors with a bit of paint, or make an attractive painting on the doors themselves. This will look unique and interesting.

Hardware can be purchased for a pocket door set. You can buy new latches and handles in a wide variety of materials. Furthermore, you can consider replacing your old doors with translucent or transparent doors, which allow more light to infiltrate the room.
