How To Give Personality To Featureless Walls

By Jackie Cobb

Buying a new home gives you an opportunity to create an environment that is uniquely you. The decoration scheme of a home speaks loudly about the personality of its owner, and a new home is a blank canvas that can speak what you want it to speak. Even an area as simple as a plain, windowless wall can have a voice of its own.

The decorations you put on a windowless wall can have a surprisingly large effect on the look and feel of a given room.

When deciding on the look and feel of a room, the first stop is usually the paint department at the home improvement store. This is especially important for rooms with relatively featureless walls. Interior rooms that do not have windows usually benefit from softer colors. Whites, as well as subtle blues, greens and yellows are popular choices. You can give rooms extra dimension with stylish wallpaper or stencil art.

The color is the first thing people notice about a wall, but after that, they will begin to notice the texture as well. You can give a wall an extra flair by giving it texture with a particular finish. There are a wide range of finishes to suit a large number of personalities and tastes. It is up to you whether you will have smooth or textured, glossy or matte, simple or patterned. You might even have your favorite piece of art applied to the wall itself as a mural.

Instead of painting and finishing a wall, some people instead decide to use some variety of wall covering. For a repeating pattern that covers the entirety of a wall, grass cloth and wall flats are popular choices, giving it texture and extra dimension. Tapestries or other hanging cloth items can also add a splash of color.

The use of art is the most common way to fill a wall with style. On large, windowless walls, most people place multiple pictures at consistent angles, sometimes stacked, one over the other, and sometimes at a pleasing, diagonal angle. Shelves, showcases, bookcases and shadow boxes can be used to display items that reveal your particular interests.

Any person with a profession that requires designing something pleasing to the eye will tell you how important a consistent vision is. Just like too many different fonts on a website will make it appear chaotic and messy, too many interior design styles will damage the look and feel of your home. It is often possible to find items that are compatible in both physical design and in color.

Before you begin adding decorations to your home, it is very important to decide on a consistent theme and roll with it consistently. Doing so will make it all tie together beautifully and create something special and unique.
