Using The Carpet As Art

By Dexter Killian

It seems like trends and fads come and go on a daily basis, and this is true of interior design trends. The tastes of the public change with time. While a home of the 80s might have proudly sported shag carpeting, a modern home that uses it non-ironically would likely not be taken too seriously. While carpets have since made a shift toward dull, neutral colors, there has more recently been an increase in using the carpet as its own piece of art instead just an empty canvas. With some clever design decisions, you can make the carpet a key element of a room's design.

Relatively small flourishes in a carpet's design can add a surprising amount and dimension and interest to a floor. Additionally, spots and marks will be less noticeable on a patterned carpet. Many modern homes now use muted colors with brighter or darker accents across the surface.

The most recent shifts in carpet styles has been headed toward layered designs, with multiple colors and structural patterns incorporated into the design. The more intricate designs tend to be more popular because they are harder to disrupt than a plain, solid color and pattern. Plain beige Berber, for example, would show dirt and vacuum marks more than a carpet that mixes colors and patterns.

As carpet-making technology has progressed, some styles have become more readily available. Loop and cut pile yarns can now be made with more intricate patterns, such a plaids, dots, swirls, bows and other shapes.

You can infuse more personality and warmth into a room with a good carpet than you might imagine. In a home you have already lived in for some time, the rooms probably already have a style. But you can continue the established style by choosing complementary carpeting. You can keep a consistent theme running by matching the colors and patterns to the furniture, or vice versa.

These new design trends provide endless opportunities to make a room pop with personality. Changing the carpet in a room can have a positive effect that reaches across its entire design scheme. It can breathe new life into a plain design. If you find yourself bored with a room, why not consider upgrading the carpet and making it feel fresh again?

The carpet can be so much more than just a layer of protection for you hard floors. More than any other type of flooring, it can lend a sense of comfort and warmth to a home. With the nearly endless types of styles of modern carpets available, and the fact that they are lower maintenance than ever, you will not regret seeing the benefits of a new carpet for yourself.
